ABOUT US
At Waymark, we find the overlap between sustainability and design excellence. The result is better buildings that contribute to our communities, respond to climate change and provide beauty to the everyday.
Principal architects Will King and Graeme Verhulst founded Waymark Architecture in 2015 to affect change in the building industry.
Through innovation and designing to Passive House standards, Living Building Challenge, and post-disaster structural requirements, Waymark Architecture brings together sustainability and design excellence. Projects range from heritage buildings, custom homes to world-leading headquarters, but all embody the firm’s values. Waymark’s leadership drives change at the industry level and within the local community through community-focused initiatives, including academic research, in-kind donations of services to improve infrastructure, and support of youth in sports.
OUR CORE VALUES
The Waymark team is diverse, with different cultural backgrounds spanning two continents and varied experiences in building and design. All team members embody our core values:
Continuous Improvement
We are getting better all the time at everything we do, from design to delivery.
We deliver more
We are hyper-focused on providing the right service for our clients whether you are a seasoned developer or looking to build your first custom-design home.
Moral compass
Waymark exists to respond to our world through better buildings. This means not cutting corners and advocating for real change within the building industry.
Caring community
We foster a caring community within our office and our local community. We take care of each other during unexpected times, and we engage in our broader community through industry groups.
Tell it like it is
Our promise is to tell it like it is whether this is an uncomfortable budget conversation with our clients or to provide feedback to city staff on the city’s processes.
Do what needs to be done
All of our team members have jumped in at times to do what needs to be done for a project. This is about putting the needs of the team before the needs of the individual.
DESIGN EXCELLENCE
Design excellence is creating an elegant solution to a problem or condition in a meaningful way.
The meaning needs to resonate with the people who interact with the design and can include things like connections to traditional crafts and local materials, symbolism and analogies, or instill an emotional response appropriate to the design, like reverence for history, or respect for a beautiful natural vista.
The elegance is found in the simplicity of the application, and the organization of the ideas into easily understood and articulated forms. This can involve a spatial organization that is similar to the expression of details and the organization of internal human systems. Elegance could be presented by a structural system that expresses optimized load paths like bones or branches, especially if the space is programmed to celebrate the beauty of natural elements.
